Why is Lemon Myrtle So Amazing?
First this talk a little about horticulture and the wonderful benefits of what is often growing right in our backyard , or our neighbours yard!
Lemon Myrtle is a native plant to Queensland in Australia. It grows in rainforests and tropical, likes a semi temperate climate with a natural distribution from Mackay to Brisbane.
The Latin name for lemon myrtle is is Backhousia Citriodoria, and it is part of the Myrtaceae family.
Other common names of this medium-sized flowering tree are Sweet Verbena Tree, Lemon-scented myrtle, Lemon-scented Ironwood.
Lemon Myrtle has many uses from culinary to medicinal and is farmed in Australia for the essential oils.
The refreshing lemon odour makes it popular in cleaning and body products and the health benefits make it a sought after ingredient in cosmetics while the essential oil is a strong source of citral which is used in perfumes, soaps, facial creams, deodorants, cosmetics, air fresheners and cleaning products such as washing powders, laundry powders and disinfectants.
Lemon myrtle is a natural germ killer. Apart from smelling absolutely beautiful, lemon myrtle oil is also naturally antibacterial and antifungal. Research by Charles Sturt University* showed that lemon myrtle oil is a better antibacterial and antifungal agent than tea-tree oil, a well-known natural topical antiseptic.
Anecdotally, lemon myrtle used around the home has been shown to reduce the incidence of minor ailments such as colds and coughs.
